End of year newsletter December 2022

19 December 2022

A year of growing. This is our first newsletter and we are really excited to tell you about our work and activities.

The Buzz is a work skills programmme established in 2021 by a group of local parents. The families recognized that their young people with learning differences, faced many barriers when making the transition from school into the community and work. We have a fantastic team who are involved in the running of the groups. Both our morning groups of young people have grown in skills and confidence. They have handled difficult jobs and overcome lots of personal barriers. To see their growth and resilience blossom is very exciting. They love the busy-ness of the Buzz and the opportunity to help other groups while building their social networks and developing work ready skills.
We rely very heavily on the good will of volunteers and we are always looking out for new people who would be keen to help us.. We have been very fortunate to have received funding from a number of sources, with this we have been able to employ a work skills facilitator and administrator for a few hours a week.
Our Friday group is currently at full capacity and our Wednesday group is growing rapidly. We have interest from a number of young people keen to join us in 2023!
Our last day of work in 2022 is 23rd December and we will be returning to work on Wednesday 11th January 2023. We look forward to continuing our great work in 2023.

TRAINING

At the Buzz we are learning job related skills. The Red Cross Nelson delivered a tailored First Aid Course over 4 sessions. All our young attended this course and received their Basic First Aid certificates on completeion of the course. Some of our young people have been doing PosBoss training. PosBoss is a service software for hospitality operators, which we use to practice selling and customer services skills.

SELLING HONEY

Have you run out of honey? We are working with Mountain Valley Honey, who supplies us with 500g jars of honey. The young people have developed fine motor skills labelling them and putting their customer service skills into a real life context. We are selling them for $12 each at the Restore. The proceeds go directly towards our work skills program.

MOVIE NIGHTS

We have run some great movie nights and the young people have had the opportunity to socialise in a more relaxed way. We have watched Mr Beans Holiday, Mrs Doubtfire and Godzilla vs Kong. We will have more exciting movies coming up next year.

MORE

Congratulations to Jana on her forthcoming marriage to her partner Cam. Jana will be away the last week of January and first week of February celebrating with family and friends. Big thanks to all the fabulous Buzz team for all your hard work this year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us during 2022....

We have had a great year, we look forward welcoming all our new and current young people to the Buzz in 2023. A huge thanks to our wonderful funders who have believed in us and supported us.
