Newsletter September 2023

21 September 2023

The Buzz crew continues to meet on Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Habitat Building in Tahunanui. A big welcome to all the young people and volunteers who have started with us at the Buzz this year.

With our growth in numbers, we are exploring new ideas and introducing new initiatives. We are making pet toys for the SPCA and exploring new ideas collaborating with the Food Factory Nelson.
While strengthening our relationships within the Habitat Community we have also started to reach out into wider community.
Sarah has just completed her 12hr work placement in the Smugglers kitchen for an hour on Wednesdays which has been a great opportunity to learn new skills and build community relationships. Jordan has taken on more work at the Nook cafe and is highly regarded as an important team member. Alfie continues his successful paid employment at Connings on Tuesday afternoons, he is considered an important part of their team. Lucy continues her paid cleaning job in Nelson and juggles this with Buzz work and NMIT.
Some BUZZ members recent attended a Future Pathways Hui at Nayland College where we presented the Buzz and met lots of other organistations and young people interested in attending the Buzz.
We started to organise regular parents catch ups to discuss topics that every family is confronted with,
such as individual funding and living independently. Hells Pizza Richmond has been providing us with free pizza for these events.
Our groups are growing and planning a sustainable future is high on our list of priorities.
Congratulations to Alfie Linn who recently represented New Zealand at the Virtus Global Games in France, playing table tennis. He bought home a silver and a bronze medal and he was the only NZ athlete to medal at the games - a huge accolade for him and the country.
Thanks to everyone involved in the Buzz, young people, volunteers, work skills facilitators committee, parents, funders and all other supporters. We couldn’t provide these amazing opportunities without you all.

TRAINING

Our young people continue to have regular Earthquake drills, Fire drills, Health & Safety refreshers and First Aid refresher sessions. They are continuing job/life skills and we have more hospitality specific courses in the pipeline.

BUS SUCCESS

Leiv, Sarah F. and Lucy are catching the bus successfully to and from the Buzz on their own.
Jeffrey started catching the bus back to town with Buzz team friends.
Alfie started taking the bus to and from the Buzz with Sal and caught it on his own for the first time, last week.
The new bus lines and timetable should make bus catching more user friendly for everyone.
